OTTO DÖRNER dispatches in real-time
Monday, January 18, 2016 – The OTTO DÖRNER Group now controls approximately 180 of its own and third-party vehicles using the dispatch software and telematics system opheo. The solution developed by Hamburg-based initions AG was particularly convincing due to its fully integrated telematics, integrated forecasting function, and the calculation of the contribution margin for each vehicle used, even during dispatching. The 60 user licenses are being used in two subsidiaries of the OTTO DÖRNER Group in the Sand, Gravel, and Landfills business unit. The subsidiaries not only deliver gravel and sand to construction sites but also collect and dispose of material from the construction sites.
The decision for opheo was preceded by an intensive analysis of many transport management systems. “In a competitive comparison, opheo proved to be the most intelligent and innovative software for managing our fleet,” explains Managing Director Oliver Dörner. Furthermore, he was convinced by the “high industry expertise of initions AG” in the building materials and bulk goods sector. At OTTO DÖRNER, the opheo modules Dispo-Cockpit, Tariffs, Fleet and Personnel, Reporting, the telematics system opheo MOBILE, and the opheo PORTAL are used for evaluating telematics data.
In opheo, tour planning and the telematics solution are fully integrated. Commercial tablets with Android operating systems, equipped with the opheo MOBILE telematics app, serve as mobile end devices in the vehicles. The app handles order management. Current driving time information is automatically read directly from the digital tachograph via a box installed in the truck and transmitted to opheo. In the first step, 65 of their own vehicles have already been equipped with opheo MOBILE. In addition to the navigation system, drivers benefit from easy communication via text messages and automatically generated work time records, which could be available for payroll accounting in the future. Another 80 trucks from transport companies regularly driving for OTTO DÖRNER are expected to follow within the next few months.
With the help of the telematics solution, dispatchers can track all connected trucks in real-time. Based on current position data, opheo calculates whether the trucks are still on schedule and provides an outlook on the estimated arrival time at subsequent destinations. In the event of impending delays, dispatchers can react in time and work with precise values. opheo won the Telematik Award in 2014 for this forecasting function.
Even during dispatching, opheo shows the contribution margin generated by each vehicle used and how these values shift with changes to the plan. Through this “Smart Planning,” the dispatcher becomes a dispatch controller. He can directly read the financial implications of his planning in euros and cents in opheo’s Dispo-Cockpit and no longer has to rely solely on his experience for his decisions. The contribution margins are calculated based on the freight revenues that opheo retrieves for each order from the Kifa merchandise management system. The revenues are compared against the tour costs, which are calculated based on the cost models stored in opheo.
opheo has been in use at OTTO DÖRNER Kies und Umwelt Mecklenburg GmbH & Co. KG since mid-August 2015. The “go-live” at OTTO DÖRNER Kies und Deponien GmbH & Co. KG followed at the beginning of September. “We always receive very competent and reliable advice and feel very well supported by initions AG. The agreed project deadlines were also met by initions,” emphasizes Project Manager Andreas Mackens.
